Resignation — [Your Name]

Hi [Name], Following our conversation, I'm writing to formally resign from my position as [Position] at [Company]. My last working day will be [Last Working Day], two weeks from today. This wasn't an easy decision. I've learned a great deal here, and I'm grateful for the opportunities you've given me — particularly [Specific Opportunity or Project]. Over the next two weeks, my priority is a clean handover. I'll document my current projects and make sure the team has everything needed to keep things moving. Thank you for your support during my time here. I'd be glad to stay in touch. Best regards, [Your Name]

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it okay to resign via email?

The gold standard is a live conversation with your manager first, followed immediately by an email that puts your resignation and last working day in writing. If you're fully remote or the relationship is strained, a standalone email is acceptable and legally sufficient in most places.

Do I have to give a reason for resigning?

No. "I've decided to move on to my next opportunity" is a complete explanation. Sharing more is optional — and anything negative is better said in an exit interview, if at all, than put in writing.

What should I not put in a resignation email?

Grievances, criticism of colleagues, salary comparisons, or where you're going next (unless you want to share). Resignation emails get forwarded to HR and can resurface years later in reference checks. Keep it short, factual, and gracious.

When is the best time to send a resignation email?

Early in the week and early in the day, right after speaking with your manager. That gives them time to plan the transition and control the message before word spreads informally.

Can my employer make me leave before my notice period ends?

In many places, yes — some companies walk resigning employees out the same day, particularly in sales or sensitive roles. Have your personal files and goodbyes in order before you hit send, and treat the notice period as an offer, not a guarantee.
